Pumping is the primary technique used in freeskating to generate momentum and maintain speed without touching the ground. By using specific body mechanics, edge control, and foot angles, freeskaters convert lateral (side-to-side) motion into forward thrust.
- Pumping relies on shifting your weight and changing the angle of your skates relative to your direction of travel.
- Edge Control: As you carve left or right, you turn the skates inward (pigeon-toed) or outward (duck-footed) to create friction and push against the ground.
- Core & Arm Drive: The rotation of your hips and arms counterbalances the leg drive, magnifying the force sent to the wheels.
- Start from a slow roll with your feet parallel, about shoulder-width apart.
- Angle your lead foot inward while pushing away from your center line.
- Swing your trailing foot forward to catch your weight and mirror the angle on the opposite side.
- Alternate the left-to-right pushing motion in a fluid, continuous "S" pattern (often referred to as the "snake" motion).
- To quickly better understand the physics, take a skate in each hand and push them side-to-side against each other. You'll instantly see them propel forward this is the exact same force happening on the asphalt.
